Entertainment

What an information overload I experience every day! There is too much, so much to absorb, process, and weigh every day. I feel entertained to death, not as of recent but as a generation. I do not think it is anyone's fault. I think efficiency in communication, education, and mass production with higher rates of global political and economic stability have created a society in which I have to chose to not be entertained. I can see in one evening the quality and intensity of entertainment that people used to save up for a whole week for. Or so I read in my history books.

One time I got my back scratched so much in church that my back became numb and I just wanted to listen to the talks. I can't handle music, internet, and tv as much as what happens at college. And so I go this summer up to work at a ranch in Victor, ID. I need time to feel. I don't want to be the audience that the White Stripes are describing:

If I could govern better, possibly by kicking roommates out of the apartment, the amount of noise media I would not need to do this. Battle on ADD.

Puzzled

Here is an excerpt from a Creative Non-Fiction essay I once read about the baseball player Roberto Clemente. I loved it because I believe there is safety and strength in living a guileless life.
“For Clemente, life was always about the right way to play the game, like when, in a game against the Astros, he ran flat-out into a wall, risking injury on a relatively meaningless play. “A catch for the ages,” the Houston Chronicle called it, but some were dismayed.
Why did you do this? Why risk injury on a nothing play?
Genuinely puzzled because the answer was so obvious, Clemente answered simply, “I wanted to catch the ball.” CNF pg.317

Looks Like I'll be out West for a While.

Another Rejection Email: May 2, 2009
Oliver --
Thanks for your emails and materials. As always, it was great to speak with you.

I hope that we will one day have you back as part of our team but, unfortunately, that time isn’t here yet. For a variety of reasons, we have hired another applicant for the position opening up in a few weeks. It has nothing to do with your qualifications which we know and appreciate. I am hoping that we will be able to speak with you again when the next position opens, probably next year. In the meantime, please keep in touch and stop in when you are in the area.

Congrats again on your graduation, and good luck with your next endeavor.
